The Transport Department has made it mandatory to install High Security Registration Plates (HSRP) on vehicles. Initially, the deadline for installing HSRP on older vehicles was set to July 31. However, due to the public’s convenience, the Transport and Road Safety Department has extended this deadline to August 10. Orders regarding this extension were issued by the Transport Department on Wednesday. Failure to install HSRP on older vehicles by August 10 could result in fines up to ₹10,000.
Deadline Extension and Compliance
According to the new orders from the Transport Department, the deadline for installing High Security Registration Plates on older vehicles has been extended to August 10. Vehicle owners can avoid fines by showing a booking slip for HSRP registration by the extended deadline. Initially, the deadline for vehicles registered before April 1, 2019, to get HSRP was set for July 31, which has now been extended for the convenience of the public.
Vehicle owners who fail to register for HSRP on the department’s designated portal by the extended deadline will face fines ranging from ₹5,000 to ₹10,000. To avoid these fines, it is crucial to apply for HSRP within the specified timeframe and install the plates on your vehicles.
Importance of High Security Registration Plates
From April 1, 2019, the government has mandated the installation of HSRP on vehicles purchased before this date. Despite this mandate, many vehicle owners have not yet changed their number plates. It is essential to understand that the older number plates, available before April 1, 2019, were prone to tampering. They could be easily removed and replaced, making it challenging to track vehicles in case of theft.
Features of High Security Registration Plates
HSRP is a secure aluminum plate affixed to the front and back of the vehicle using a minimum of one-time use snap-on locks, making them difficult to remove or tamper with once installed. The numbers and letters on the HSRP are imprinted with a hot-stamped film, with “INDIA” inscribed at a 45-degree angle. The characters on the plate have a specific font size of 10mm, designed to reflect light and be easily captured by CCTV cameras.
On the top left corner of the HSRP, there is a chromium-based hot-stamped Ashoka Chakra hologram in blue color. Below this, on the bottom left corner, there is a 10-digit laser-etched code that is unique to each vehicle’s front and rear plates. This code contains all details about the vehicle, such as the chassis and engine number, purchase date, model, dealer, and registration authority.
Cost and Application Process for HSRP
The cost of HSRP varies based on the type of vehicle. For two-wheelers, the plate costs ₹425; for cars, it is ₹695; for medium and heavy vehicles, it is ₹730; and for tractors used in agriculture, it is ₹495.

Benefits of HSRP

- Standardization: Uniformity in number plates helps law enforcement agencies easily identify and track vehicles.
